🪭 catch this mix been a minute huh? here’s some haiku I wrote while getting crossed up by united airlines before the 24th: nine hours in transit through liminal space's void refunded, at least time slows to a crawl here, clocks count millennia united airlines basic economy punished frugality in boarding group six bickering neighbors like a stream’s stones grown threadbare gate clerk’s monotone tree bark bare against brisk breeze waiting nascent leaves — TSA toe socks. the screen door’s comfort mostly aspirational nutrition through thought reticent date pits plucked out of slumber like from a winter’s warm bed the watering hole makes me wonder what it is that taught you to sit? many things happened since we last met, though I’ll try to keep as concise as possible by focusing on only the fun things. From the top: I’ve started two new projects with Brad (it’s always with Brad). One called rss snail that pulls articles from RSS/Atom feeds and sends them to an email address. It’s the first name that came to mind. The second is an ANSI C compiler for Tal, allowing roms for Uxn to be created from a higher level language. If that’s what you want to call ANSI C. The project is called ucc and is currently empty while I read books on compilers and knock my head on broken lexers and parsers. Read more

Minolta X-570, Ektachrome 100 - Whitesands National Park - July 10 2021 What is this, a rant? Say you have, I don’t know, a 3 person team where one of which is ideally a leader of some sort. In a System Reliability context, this team will perhaps handle a wide variety of tasks for both the now and the future. This is to say, tasks encompassing development, prevention, maintenance, but also developer support, and incident response. In an ideal world, the former grouping resolves the latter. This never happens. Many dependencies are out of your control (i.e. cloud providers) and there are only so many unknowns that can be known unknowns. Indeed, what you can control, is the level of risk accepted and the process for filtering these risks into tasks handled by your sad, small team. Read more
